چکیده

A polymer-silica hybrid 2×2 thermo-optic switch is demonstrated. The top cladding and core layer are composed of polymers, while the bottom cladding is made of silica. Since polymer and silica have opposite signs of thermo-optic coefficients, the change of the refractive index of the core is opposite to that of the bottom cladding as the temperature increased. With the finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and thermal coupling simulation, the proposed device presents a crosstalk of 20 and 18 dB at bar state and cross state, respectively. The device also exhibits extinction ratios of 19 and 27 dB at each state. In addition, the low absorption of material and simple structure of the device enable the insertion loss to be 17 dB. Also the electrical power consumption is about 45 mW at λ = 1.55 μm. The rise time and fall time of switching are 0.2 ms and 0.4 ms, respectively.

Hybrid optical waveguide devices based on polymers and silica

The hybrid integration of polymer and silica in optical waveguides can yield devices that combine the excellent thermo-optic properties of polymers and the superior passive waveguiding properties of silica. The large difference and opposite sign of the thermo-optic coefficients of both classes of materials can be utilized to create athermal waveguide devices. In addition, it can be utilized in ...

N × N polymer matrix switches using thermo-optic total-internal-reflection switch.

We have developed fully non-blocking optical matrix switches using a thermo-optic polymer 1 × 2 total-internal-reflection (TIR) switch as a unit switching element. The TIR switch consists of crossed multimode polymer waveguides and an offset heater electrode at the switching node. The fabricated 4 × 4 and 8 × 8 optical matrix switch chips show excellent switching performances. The insertion los...

Hybrid fiber resonator employing LRSPP waveguide coupler for gyroscope

Polarization error and temperature noise are two main limits to the performance of resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). To overcome these limits, we demonstrated a hybrid resonator consisting of a polymer-based long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide coupler and a silica fiber. Single-polarization property of LRSPP waveguide and the offsetting of the opposite thermo-optical cha...

Mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding for hybrid TiO2/electro-optic polymer waveguide modulators.

We report the efficient poling of an electro-optic (EO) polymer in a hybrid TiO(2)/electro-optic polymer multilayer waveguide modulator on mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding. The mesoporous sol-gel silica has nanometer-sized pores and a low refractive index of 1.24, which improves mode confinement in the 400-nm-thick EO polymer film in the modulators and prevents optical absorption from the low...

An integrated thin-film thermo-optic waveguide beam deflector

We have demonstrated the operation of a thin-film thermo-optical beam deflector in a three-layer optical planar waveguide. The fabricated waveguide beam deflector consists of a thin-film SiO2 bottom cladding layer, a thin-film polymer top cladding layer, and alternatively positioned thin-film polymer and silica microprisms as the guiding layer. The beam deflection is achieved through the thermo...
